Kuala Lumpur has a tropical rainforest type of climate (Köppen climate classification Af), which is hot and sunny with abundant rainfall. Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, lies on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, south of Thailand and east of Sumatra in Indonesia, near the Straits of Malacca, at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. The city is close to the equator, which has an influence on its climate with ample rain and warm temperatures throughout the year.

The vast Klang Valley is a distinct feature of Kuala Lumpur's geography, with the Titiwangsa Mountains in the east and the Malaccan Straits to the west. The topography of the city is flat, with minor mountain ranges in the north and south. The average elevation is only 21 meters above sea level, and Kuala Lumpur often faces a threat from floods. The annual rainfall is massive, to the tune of 2540mm (100") with 220 rainy days during the year and an average humidity over 80%. Kuala Lumpur registers 2222 hours of sunshine during the year. The equatorial location keeps the days and nights of equal durations throughout the year.

Kuala Lumpur has consistently hot and humid weather throughout the year. The temperature variations between the days and nights rarely are in the range of -9.4°C (15.1°F) to -6.7°C (19.9°F) irrespective of the time of the year. The average high temperatures reach 33°C (91.4°F) at the peak of April, while the average low temperature is at its lowest of 23.4°C (74.1°F) in January. Maximum daily temperatures hover between the 32.2°C (90°F) and 35°C (95°F) range most of the time. The northeast monsoon season is from October to March, which is often stormy with heavy rains in Kuala Lumpur, while the southwest monsoon is comparatively milder.

The highest temperature on record for Kuala Lumpur is 39.4°C (102.9°F), set in August in one of the hottest years, while the record lowest temperature is 16.1°C (61°F), set in January in one of the coldest years of the city's history.

The city has almost consistent temperatures throughout the year, but the best time to visit Kuala Lumpur is from June to August and December to January when the rainfall is relatively lesser than the rest of the year. The dry period is less prone to floods and storms, and the weather is comfortable, especially in the nearby hilly areas where the temperatures are in the range of 15.6°C (60.1°F) to 26.7°C (80.1°F) - the humidity drops in the mountains where the conditions are pleasant in the dry season.

September to November is usually the worst time to visit Kuala Lumpur as the rainfall is heavy, the humidity is high, and the risk of flooding is extreme. The haze season occurs during this period due to the burning of slash in the nearby islands of Indonesia, particularly in Sumatra. The heat and humidity are unbearable at times, especially for visitors from the temperate weather zones. November is a tourist off-season and within budget due to the wet weather.

Kuala Lumpur is prone to thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, and flash-floods, mainly during the rainy season. Thunderstorms are frequent in the area with lightning and rain. Tropical storms of variable intensities occasionally strike the Malay shores, but Kuala Lumpur's location is relatively safe inside the straits. Heavy rains during the wet season cause flash floods in Kuala Lumpur due to the city's low elevation, flat topography, and inefficient drainage systems.
